Accidental Assassin, Vol. 1 is a graphic novel that was fun and quick to read. It jumped right into the action and captured my attention from the beginning. I enjoyed the colorful artwork and liked that each character had a distinctive look so I could tell who was who. Bonnie and Ronan have such different personalities but it seems to work well here. I feel like Bonnie is especially relatable, and I’m interested to see how her character develops over time. The novel leaves off on a bit of a cliffhanger but also seems like a logical break point. I look forward to continuing the series to see what happens next!

Soulmates

Soulmates turned out to be an interesting read. It starts out when the characters are younger but quickly moves ahead to when they are high school seniors. Despite being a bit unsure about this one at first, I found that I really ended up getting drawn in. I ended up staying up past my bedtime because there was no way I could put it down without seeing how it would end! I thought the use of 2 different styles of artwork worked well and really set the mood for the darker parts. Kit and Emma were both characters that I liked and related to. I thought it was a nice touch that their internal thoughts were in different colors, so it was easy to tell who was thinking what.

I had never read this manga before, so I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. What I really wasn’t expecting was how intense it would be and how much it doesn’t shy away from some very serious topics. While it’s very much a high school drama, the characters had quite a bit of depth to them. Rei was an especially intriguing character. There were parts of him that were scary and reckless, but there was also something vulnerable about him beneath the surface. I feel like Kira and Rei are very different from each other, but they seem to bring out something good in each other. I also really liked the artwork! This edition includes the first two volumes of the manga, so at this point I feel pretty invested and want to know what will happen next.

Love 4 a Walk has been one of my favorite WEBTOON series, so I love seeing it in this graphic novel format! Volume 2 includes episodes 15-30 and picks up right where the first volume left off. This series has beautiful artwork that is colorful and inviting. I think Pam and Tyler are really cute together, and I can’t help but root for them. Their interactions can be charmingly awkward while also sprinkling in some flirty moments too. Their different personalities complement each other well. Their pet dogs are a lot of fun too, and I love their silly antics. This volume ends in a bit of a cliffhanger, but it just leaves me excited for the next volume to see where things go next!

This manga was really cute! There has such a sweet innocence to it with a strong “high school crush” feeling. Waya was a very relatable character for me since I am also a quiet person who doesn’t like to draw attention. It was nice to see Chika and Waya go from basically strangers to friends. I liked seeing Waya open up and even start to interact with other classmates a bit. The story in Volume 1 covers about a year, which surprised me. The time jumps weren’t always super obvious, but the setting indicated the changing seasons. A couple chapters were from the points of view of other characters, which felt a little random, but then again it’s probably setting up storylines for a series. I liked the artwork and was able to read the whole volume in a single sitting. This is a manga that I was like to continue reading.

I’ve actually read this comic on WEBTOON a couple times, so it’s nice to see it in a graphic novel format! I really like the art style, and I can’t help but love the characters, Pam and Tyler. They are both dog owners and you can just feel their love for dogs. It’s cute to see the dogs’ antics and how they bring Tyler and Pam together. There’s a grumpy/sunshine dynamic, and while it’s a romance, it’s very slow burn. This volume ends on a bit of a cliffhanger, but it definitely leaves me wanting to continue reading.

Xolo

I went into the book with not much knowledge about Aztec mythology, so this was a fun way to learn about it. The artwork in the book looks Aztec-inspired, and I liked how colorful it was. The gods had their actual Aztec names, which I wasn’t very good at pronouncing some of them, but otherwise the story was easy to understand.

This book is retelling a story about Xolotl, one of the Aztec gods. Xolo was a relatable character. I think his story provides some valuable lessons, like how an outcast or perceived monster can actually be a hero. I also liked how it tied in to dogs and their special connection to humans.

I think this book would most appeal to children, probably in older grade school. The pictures keep it from feeling overwhelming while providing more substance than a picture book.

The Secret Lives of Candy Hearts

I was already somewhat familiar with Tommy Siegel and his Candy Hearts comics, so I was excited to check out this new collection. I enjoyed reading the book, and it was a nice pick-me-up that had me literally laughing out loud at times. The statements are so blunt yet relatable, like seeing into what someone really thinks. I thought the pop-culture references were a nice touch. The art is colorful and portrays each situation well. I liked it as much as I hoped I would! Note: there are some f-bombs sprinkled in, so if you find that offensive, this might not be the book for you.

It’s always been just Gemma and her mom, with no other family or connections to her heritage in Thailand. When she finds out that her grandfather has recently passed and left her a trail of clues that lead to Thailand and a possible inheritance, Gemma can’t pass up on the opportunity. But the only way to get there is to ask for help from her ex and biggest rival, Xander.

Ex Marks the Spot was one of those books that I just couldn’t put down and really enjoyed reading. At first I thought Gemma, our main character, felt a bit young and was a little petty in her rivalry against her ex, Xander, but it allowed for an incredible amount of character growth. I really enjoyed the treasure hunt feel of the story, with various puzzles presented along the way. I couldn’t fully appreciate all of them since I don’t know Mandarin, but since Gemma doesn’t either, it didn’t take away from the story at all. I loved all the vivid descriptions of landmarks and food in Thailand, and found myself looking up more information along the way since it all sounded so amazing. While there’s a romance that develops along the way, I think the themes of finding heritage, learning family history, the true meaning of family, learning to understand others, and figuring out who you are were the shining themes of the book. I also enjoyed the story within the story while Gemma learned about her grandfather’s past and the challenges he faced in life. After reading this book, I definitely want to read more by author Gloria Chao.

Worry Lines: You’re Doing Really Well Given the Circumstances

This book is something that would be great to have, just to look through on a day when I can use a pick-me-up or a reason to smile. The images are simple yet inviting, with bold colors and generic people that I think anyone could relate to. I love how these simple images can give such a great visible portrayal of emotions and feelings. I saw myself in so many pages, conveying things that I often find hard to even describe with words. Through the book, the collection looks at a variety of struggles (anxiety, depression, procrastination, lack of focus, etc) we face in day-to-day life and puts a positive spin on them, making you feel like it’s okay to not always be okay. I have a feeling I’ll be ordering a physical copy of this book when it releases.
